Yeats Country

Sligo is often referred to as Yeats Country.  It was for many years the holiday home of William Butler Yeats, and the inspiration for much of his literary work.  His brother, artist Jack Butler Yeats was also uses Sligo as inspiration for much of his work.

The Yeats Society describes the Yeats family:

William Butler Yeats is Ireland’s greatest poet and considered by many the finest poet of the twentieth century. His father John Butler Yeats was a renowned portraitist, his sisters were innovative craftworkers and printers, and his brother Jack Yeats became Ireland’s most celebrated painter.

In December 1923, WB Yeats became the first Irish writer to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, “for his always inspired poetry, which in a highly artistic form gives expression to the spirit of a whole nation”.

Benbulbin

Benbulbin is a large flat-topped rock formation of 1,726 feet forming part of the Dartry Mountains.  It is the setting for many Irish mythical legends and said to be the resting place of the mythical couple Diarmuid and Gráinne.

Benbulbin features prominently in the poetry of W.B. Yeats.  He is buried in Druncliffe Churchyard, in the shadow of Benbulbin

Mullaghmore

Mullaghmore is one of the best big wave surfing destinations in the world. On 8 March 2012, surfers and windsurfers from all over the world rode waves up to 15 metres (49 ft) high off Mullaghmore Head.

Sligo Abbey

Sligo Abbey is a Dominican Friary was founded in 1253 century by Maurice Fitzgerald.  The site contains a great wealth of carvings including Gothic and Renaissance tomb sculpture, well preserved cloister and the only sculptured 15th century high altar to survive in any Irish monastic church.
